In the book The Crossing, Manny describes the city of Juarez as "never quiet," and full of noises like car horns honking, people yelling or cursing, and noise at the market place. He also describes several blocks of bars and cafes near the bridge and the Two by Four, a place where he begs for tortillas. How would you describe Juarez? Use what you know from visits or newpapers and television or ask a family member for their descriptions and post your answer here.

Prior to the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848, Ciudad Juarez was known as "El Paso del Norte" due to its geographic characteristics that enabled the Conquistadores to continue the "Camino Real" into the vast area that reached present-day Northern California. After the Treaty of Guadalupe fixed the US/Mexico border using the Rio Grande east to the Gulf of Mexico, the settlement on the southern bank of the river continued to be an important stop on the trade route. Today, across from El Paso, Texas, Ciudad Juarez is one of the largest cities along the US-Mexico border. One can enjoy a wide variety of great restaurants, stop by the open mercado or visit various sites where the Mexican hero, Pancho Villa, rode. There is always an overabundance of attractions, however, at the moment, the city is in the middle of a vicious drug war.
